Rare Vintage Original Route 66 and 395 Highway Signs... The only round Route 66 sign known to exist. There are no known others in any museum or private collection. Two matching signs, 66 and 395, retired plywood highway signs from southern California. These two signs came from the junction of Hwy 395 and US 66 near Victorville / Hesperia, California which is now the junction of Hwy 395 and Interstate 15 (US 66 is now I-15 in that area).
US 66 was established November 11, 1926 and in 1927 federal regulation adopted the "shield" shaped design. This round 66 sign was only made for that 1 year, 1926. A rendition of this iconic sign is seen on the Santa Monica pier "End of the Trail" Route 66 sign the Santa Monica sign with the addition of "Santa Monica" "End of the Trail" is actually from a movie...Some great history of that sign can be found at 66toCali dot com. Each sign Measures 36 x 36 inches, 3/4 inches thick. Both are in original unrestored / uncleaned condition. Plywood is flat and solid, wear and scratches commensurate with age and use. Very Rare and very unique pieces!
