In 1824, John Cadbury opened a grocers shop at 93 Bull Street, Birmingham. In 1866 the launch of'Cadbury Cocoa Essence', was the UK's first unadulterated cocoa. Cocoa Essence was extensively advertised as Absolutely Pure. Bournville Cocoa was launched in 1906, a less bitter cocoa then the original "Essence".
There are the usual patches of enamel loss and nibbles to the metal around the edges, there are also some patches of loss to the body of the sign. It also has the usual scuffs and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age that has been attached to a shop wall for years in all weathers! However, the stylish white lettering is still clear and legible, the red background has faded in places, but what remains still have a fair depth of colour.I have tried to show the condition. The bracket has suffered from rusting over the years, but what remains is sturdy and well attached. The sign measures 23 cm (9 inches) by 20 cm (8 inches). This makes a great display item, and is a wonderful piece of social history.
