This watch is one of the earliest examples of a Panerai watch dating back to the 1930s. It is 47mm and features a Rolex Movement.

The case back is signed Oyster Watch C o. It is in extremely fine condition and is one of the finest examples of a vintage Panerai watch in existence. It was military worn in the Italian military. The brand produces watches based on world renown recognizable models, the Luminor, the Radiomir and the Mare Nostrum. The Vintage pieces of Panerai models were at one time supplied to specialised underwater military combat units of the Reggio Marina (Royal Italian Navy) during WWII and Marina Militare till early 1970s. In the 1930s one of the Panerai family businesses was a retail and repair boutique offering a selection of the finest Swiss watch brands : Rolex, Vacheron & Constantin, Longines, Buren, Eldis, Angelus, Movado and more.

This is probably what lead Guido Panerai to modify, prepare and create instruments, watches destined for specialised use in extreme underwater conditions, offering precision (Rolex cases and movement), readability (dials with high underwater luminosity) and later in the 1950s more underwater resistance (the patented protecting crown device). Here is one of the known first rare ancestor of the current Officine Panerai RADIOMIR, A 1930s ROLEX 3646.

A large Rolex Radiomir case Ø 47mm, with a Cal. 618 Rolex movement (manual wind, 17jewels), with a Rolex California dial. This Rolex 3646 is one of the rare unmodified piece, this means that this piece is entirely a Rolex watch with its original California dial. In fact some very fews pieces remained as supplied by Rolex, unmodified and were also used by military diving units and some of the Navy officers. Considering its age this vintage piece is in a beautiful condition as well as mechanically running perfectly with precision.

It is a highly collectible piece filled with history of both Rolex and Panerai as well as the specialised early combat swimmers and their operations.
